More About Wicked
Wicked Tickets Information
Based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked is an alternate telling of events that occurred during the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of Oz, from their meeting at Shiz University through Dorothy's arrival from Kansas (“No One Mourns the Wicked”).
Wicked tells the story of two roommates, brilliant and misunderstood Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and perfect, blonde Glinda the Good, whose immediate hatred of one another (“What Is This Feeling?”) slowly turns into friendship despite themselves (“Popular”). Meanwhile, as Elphaba and Galinda (as she was then known) deal with schoolwork and romantic rivalries (“Dancing Through Life”), their differing reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government tears apart their relationship and leads Elphaba to rebel (“Defying Gravity”).
What happens when Elphaba tries to stand up for Munchkin rights and free the enslaved winged monkeys? Get your Wicked tickets today to find out!
Renowned composer Stephen Schwartz discovered Gregory Maguire's novel in 1998 and persuaded him to release the rights for a stage production with an "impassioned plea" to Universal producer Marc Platt, who had already purchased the rights for a movie. Schwartz collaborated with Emmy Award-winning writer Winnie Holzman to develop the outline of the plot over the course of a year, creating an original stage piece rather than a strict adaptation of Maguire's work.
For Wicked’s developmental workshops, Kristin Chenoweth, the Tony Award-winning actress Schwartz had in mind while writing the character, joined the project as Glinda. On June 10, 2003, Wicked premiered in San Francisco and ran for a month. Noting mixed critical responses, the creative team made extensive changes before its transfer to Broadway on October 30, 2003.
In 2005, the first national tour of Wicked began in Toronto, eventually moving to Chicago for an open-ended run until on January 25, 2009. There have also been productions based in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and a second national tour began in 2009. The West End production in London opened in 2006 and is slated to play through 2015, while there have also been a variety of tours in countries around the world.
