More About South Carolina Gamecocks Football

Founded: 1892

Stadium: Williams-Brice Stadium

National Championships: 0

Conference Titles: 2 (1933 Southern Conference, 1969 ACC)

Notable Players: Sheldon Brown, Tom Addison, Sterling Sharpe, Duce Staley, George Rogers, John Abraham, Jadeveon Clowney

Coach Steve Spurrier led the Gamecocks for their third consecutive 11 win season for their 2013-14 campaign. With key losses in Connor Shaw and Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina will look to their running game on offense.

Dylan Thompson looks poised to take a team ranked in the top 10 to win an SEC Championship. A strong offensive line led by running back Mike Davis, who rushed 1,1843 yards this past season, can ease the load on Thompson. If the Gamecocks can manage to execute offensively perhaps they can close the gaps found on their defensive line once filled with Jadeveon Clowney, Kelcy Quarlez, and Chaz Sutton. An inexperience secondary will be battle tested with the Gamecocks possibly looking to their linebackers such as Sharrod Golightly to make plays.

South Carolina 2014 Schedule

Ranking ninth by the AP preseason poll, the Gamecocks have been in the nation’s top 25 rankings for the 65th consecutive time. With an 18 home game run, the Gamecocks will fight to keep that streak alive when they open the season against Texas A&M.

Key Matchups

Sept. 13 vs. Georgia - Though the Gamecocks have fared well against the Bulldogs in their last two home stands, this will be a must win in clinching the SEC East.

Oct. 25 at Auburn - Having been unable to beat the Tigers since 1933, the Gamecocks will look to get a victory at Auburn. Locking down a win would put the Gamecocks in line for the SEC Championship and in the playoff picture.

Nov. 1 vs. Tennessee - After missing a shot at the division title last season against the Volunteers in a 23-21 loss, the Gamecocks look to exact revenge.
