OSU faces a devastating blow with losing their star quarterback Braxton Miller to a torn labrum which will sideline him for the 2014 season. Despite this loss however, redshirt J.T. Barrett has assumed the role to becoming the voice of the Buckeyes in ensuring they remain competitive. Though he has yet to play a game as a starter, Barrett has shown pristine work ethic and viable support from his teammates.

Urban Meyer looks to add a new offensive approach that can bolster OSU’s game in the Miller’s absence. Though Barrett does not have the athleticism or speed that Miller brought to OSU’s offense, Barrett does have the skill set necessary to run the read option offense. Barrett should have plenty of options with Dontre Wilson (drawing comparisons to Seattle Seahawks’ Percy Harvin), Jalin Marshall, Devin Smith, Michael Thomas, and Johnnie Dixon. Also, expect a breakout season for Ezekiel Elliott now that Carlos Hyde was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers.

A lot will be dependent on the Buckeyes maintaining their defensive intensity when making plays. To keep any title hopes and survive in the Big Ten, the Buckeyes will have to rely on on their defensive front who is stocked with talent and potential. Joey Bosa and Noah Spence, with the tandem of Adolphus Washington and Tommy Schutt will prove to be a pass rushing nightmare for offenses.

OSU’s biggest concern will be in their secondary with Vonn Bell, Doran Grant, Eli Apple, Marshon Lattimore, and Damon Webb who although are youthful in experience can make an impact. A concern at linebacker, Joshua Perry has a chance this coming season to showcase he is an All-Big Ten linebacker. Ohio State Football Schedule 2014

The Buckeyes have a difficult road ahead of them if they want to compete for a National Championship. The Big Ten is getting tougher and tougher. Michigan State and Wisconsin are always challenging opponents, and newcomers Maryland and Rutgers won't go down quietly either. While the path may be difficult, Urban Meyer's team has enough talent to not only handle these teams, but take home the conference championship.
