The Oakland Athletics (or A’s for short) were one of the pre-eminent MLB franchises in the early 1900s. They were one o the only teams to rival the Yankees in the late 20s and captured three titles in four seasons between 1910-1914. Reggie Jackson, Jim “Catfish” Hunter and Rollie Fingers helped Oakland win three straight titles in the early 1970s. Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire and Dennis Eckersley helped bring Oakland its ninth title in franchise history.
But the A’s haven’t won in almost a quarter of a century. Since then, Oakland has employed an operational method that has become known as “Moneyball”. General Manager Billy Beane took a different approach to scouting and signing players, putting an emphasis on young pitching and players that got on base at high clips. The results have been successful, but the A’s haven’t advanced further than the ALCS.
That might all change in 2014. The A’s currently sport the best record in the American League and made some big moves at the trade deadline. They acquired three solid starting pitchers, including ace Jon Lester. Oakland is going all-in this season, and the playoff push looks like an exciting one.
