More About Matilda - The Musical
Matilda Tickets Information
Matilda the Musical tickets are the hottest British import we’ve seen all year. The stage musical is based on the children's novel by Roald Dahl, though you may be more familiar with the 1996 Matilda movie starring Danny DeVito and Emberth Davidtz.
It was written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. The story is about Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl who loves reading despite her discouraging family and prison-like school (“The Hammer”).
Matilda discovers she can move objects with her mind (“Quiet”), bonds with her teacher Miss Honey (“My House”) and decides to use her powers to free her school from the tyranny of Miss Trunchbull (“Revolting Children”). Matilda tickets are a joy for audiences of all ages, from the young to the young at heart.
Matilda has been on a long journey to get to a Broadway stage near you. In 2009, the Royal Shakespeare Company announced its intention to stage a musical adaptation of Matilda, with Dennis Kelly as playwright and Tim Minchin as the composer and lyricist.
It opened at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, on December 9, 2010 and played through January 30, 2011. The musical received its West End debut at London's Cambridge Theatre on October 25, 2011 and won several Olivier Awards in 2012.
The Broadway production opened on April 11, 2013 at the Shubert Theatre and in October 2013, Matilda tickets broke the box office record for the Shubert. The show is playing indefinitely on Broadway and the West End, but an American national tour has also been announced for 2015.
