Kinky Boots is a musical with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the 2005 film of the same name, which was inspired by a true story, the musical is about a struggling British shoe factory, whose young, straitlaced owner Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with drag queen Lola to save the business (“Land of Lola”).

They develop a plan to produce “kinky boots” for drag queens and kings (“Sex is in the Heel”), rather than the men's dress shoes the firm is known for (“Not My Father’s Son”), and in the process he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

Production History

Kinky Boots has been a long time in the making. In 1999, the BBC2 television series Trouble at the Top featured the story of Steve Pateman, who was struggling to save his family-run shoe factory from closure and decided to produce fetish footwear for men.

In 2005, the story was adapted into a British film, and quickly attracted the attention of Broadway producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig. They hired Jerry Mitchell to direct, Harbey Fierstein to write the book and Cyndi Lauper for music and lyrics, which marked Lauper’s debut as a musical theater songwriter.

Kinky Boots was first produced in Chicago from October 2 to November 4, 2012 and opened on Broadway on April 4, 2013, where it is still playing. So grab your Kinky Boots tickets today and get ready for a fabulous show!
