When you think early, great post merger NFL teams the Chiefs come to mind pretty quickly having represented the AFC in the first-ever Super Bowl in 1966 against the Green Bay Packers. Prior to 2013, however, there hasn’t been much for the Chiefs faithful to cheer body as they’ve made just one appearance in the big game since 1969 when they won their one and only title.
Last year, after hiring former Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs were on their way to a remarkable regular season having won their first 9 games and 11 out of their first 14. But two critical losses to end the season against the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers before a wild season-ending loss to the Colts in Indianapolis in the AFC Wild Card game.
Kansas City’s jekyll and hyde 2013 season has many people asking which are the real Chiefs? Their offseason was pretty uneventful as sixteen of the team's 22 regular starters from last year return a bit of a gamble if you consider the team may have been better off plugging up some obvious weaknesses. But Reid is the type of coach who believes his his style and the players who fit and most would take the lack of movement as a sign of Reid’s confidence. So get your Kansas City Chiefs tickets today to see how the team makes out this season.
The Chiefs Rivals
Chiefs vs. Raiders
This rivalry dates back to the 1960s and was accelerated thanks to Major League Baseball. When the Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland in 1967 the expansion Royals stayed in Kansas City and were placed in Oakland’s division. Right around the same time the football Chiefs and Raiders were battling to represent the newly formed AFC in the newly established Super Bowl. Since the beginning of the rivalry, the teams have met 108 times with the Chiefs leading the series 57–51–2. The Chiefs are ahead in playoff match-ups with a record of 2 victories to 1. Interestingly, the Chiefs are one of just four teams in the NFL with a winning record against Oakland.
Chiefs vs. Broncos
Nothing spells rivalry like two teams that have to face each other in division every year and the Chiefs and Broncos have done just that sharing a division together since 1960. One player who added major spice to this rivalry was John Elway, who defeated the Chiefs on the last drive 8 times in his career. In the 1998 divisional playoffs behind Elway the Broncos defeated the number 1 seeded Chiefs 14-10 en route to Elway’s first of two Super Bowl victories. In their 108 meetings the Chiefs barely lead the Broncos 56-52.
