More About Carolina Hurricanes

Established: 1972

Stadium: PNC Arena

Stanley Cups Won: 1 (2005-06)

Notable Players: Rod Brind’Amour, Eric Staal, Cam Ward

Rivals: Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning

Originally the New England Whalers, the Carolina Hurricanes changed their name and relocated to Raleigh in 1997, becoming the city’s only professional sports organization. The team’s start in NC was marred by difficulties resulting from the lack of a proper arena in Raleigh, forcing them to play 80 miles away in Greensboro, as well play 82 away games. These factors led to a less than savory attendance rate in the first few seasons. Things picked up, though, in the 2000-01 season when the team made the playoffs. They followed this up with a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they faced the all around favorite Detroit Red Wings. The Canes stole the first game in surprising fashion before the Wings came back to win the next 4 games in a row.

The team returned to the Finals in 2005-06 and won their first Stanley Cup in 7 games against the Edmonton Oilers. The star of this series was rookie Cam Ward who won MVP.

Since then, they’ve missed the playoffs in the last 5 seasons but hope to return to the playoffs under new head coach Bill Peters. What will this season hold? Grab your Carolina Hurricanes tickets now and find out for yourself.
