Mets Balk Away Chance at Sweep

Mets lose to Braves 9-8 in heartbreaking fashion.

Mets Balk Away Chance at Sweep

It sounded too good to be true. And, well, it was. The New York Mets were three Francisco Rodriguez outs away from sweeping the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field for the first time since 2007.  The Mets rallied from four runs down and had a two run lead going into the ninth. Rodriguez attempted to convert his 20th straight save of the season, but Brooks Conrad's pinch-hit two-run home run tied the game 8-8, snapping the streak at 19.

In the bottom of the tenth inning, Lucas Duda misplayed a ball that he should have let sure-handed second baseman Ruben Tejada field, giving the Braves runners on first and third with two out. New York pitcher D.J. Carrasco threw strike one to Jason Heyward, before flinching while coming set. Home plate umpire Diory Hernandez called a balk, the winning run scored, and the Braves won 9-8. It was a brutal way to lose the game, but it was the correct call nonetheless. Neither Carrasco nor manager Terry Collins argued.

R.A. Dickey lasted just 4 innings, allowing 6 runs (4 earned); Manny Acosta, Pedro Beato, Tim Byrdak, and Jason Isringhausen combined to pitch four shutout innings in relief before Rodriguez blew the save and Carrasco got the loss. The Mets will have to settle for taking two out of three from their division rivals in a place they've had so much trouble in over the years. Overall, they went 6-4 during their ten game road trip. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim come to Citi Field for a weekend series beginning tonight.

Jose Reyes' brilliant season continued on Thursday. New York's stud shortstop went 3-6, hit his 12th triple and added his 23rd steal of the year. Reyes' .348 batting average and 101 hits both lead the league. Chipper Jones continued his dominance over the Mets. The Met killer went 3-4 and drove in 5 runs before leaving the game late with a day-to-day injury. It ended up not hurting Atlanta; Brooks Conrad hit his game tying home run in the ninth while pinch hitting in Jones' spot in the order.
