The Miami Marlins have broken the bank for their franchise player. Giancarlo Stanton signed a record contract with the Miami ball club earlier this week. Stanton finalized a 13-year, $325 million dollar contract to stay with the Marlins. It's the richest contract not just in MLB history, but in the history of sports. The contract also includes a no-trade clause and Stanton is allowed to opt-out after six years and $107 million dollars. Last season, Stanton hit 37 home runs and drove in 105 RBI. His average sat at .288 for the season, which is solid, not spectacular.
Breaking the bank on a home run hitter is a strange proposition. It was pitching that decided the World Series. Although it will be unlikely to see a pitching performance as special as Madison Bumgarner for San Francisco this postseason, the adage tells us good pitching beats good hitting. With Stanton making north of $300 million dollars, the Marlins will have a tough time signing a solid five man starting rotation and a sturdy bullpen. Stanton is a proven slugger and home run hitter, but the contract may affect other key skill positions for the Marlins.
