Champ Bailey retires after 15 NFL Seasons

12-time pro bowl lock down cornerback Champ Bailey announced his retirement earlier this afternoon after 15 NFL seasons.

His career began with the Washington Redskins. With the seventh overall pick in the 1999 draft, the Redskins drafted the former University of Georgia star. His outstanding reputation from college carried over into the pros where he quickly became one of the NFL’s best shutdown corners.

In 2004, Bailey was traded to the Denver Broncos in exchange for Clinton Portis and a second round draft pick. Bailey spent the vast majority of his career in Denver. In his final season he reached his first super bowl with the franchise where they were heavily defeated 43-8 by the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium.

After the massive super bowl loss, Bailey was cut from the Broncos to free up salary cap space. He then signed a 2-year deal with the New Orleans Saints where he failed to make the 53-man regular season roster. According to ESPN sources, Bailey has since received offers to play elsewhere but has declined them to pursue new career opportunities.

Bailey is ending his career with 52 career interceptions. He is a future Hall of Famer, perhaps even only five years from now when he is first eligible.
