Much Anticipated 'Jimi: All Is by My Side' Gets A New Trailer

In this article…

The long-awaited and much talked about film Jimi: All Is by My Side gets a new official trailer and, boy, it looks cool. André Benjamin, aka André 3000 from Outkast, plays the iconic rock guitarist and, based on an early look from the trailer, I'd have to say I'm impressed. From his tone and demeanor to his lefty guitar playing, Benjamin seems to have captured the wild, creative being that was Jimi Hendrix. Benjamin, a righty, spent months practicing so he could play the guitar lefty for the film. That's dedication, but also a recognition of respect by Benjamin that he's playing a legend on screen and wants to do him justice.

Jimi: All Is by My Side chronicles Hendrix's pre-fame years, as it takes place in London from 1966-1967. However, due to a denied request by the filmmakers to Hendrix's estate Experience Hendrix LLC, the film will not feature any song's written by Hendrix. Instead, the film will feature songs performed during 1966/67 and before the release of his debut album Are You Experienced, which was released in 1967.

It is written and directed by 12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley, who is a controversial figure to some. He infamously wrote during the writer's guild strike that began in late 2007 and then there are the stories about his work on 12 Years A Slave and how director Steve McQueen rewrote a decent portion of the screenplay, but Ridley denied him a co-writing credit. He went on to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and did not thank McQueen. Talk about a burn. Ridley seizes full control of this film, so there won't be the same sort of controversy surrounding it.

This film was screened at the Toronto Film Festival last year and a few other festivals earlier this year, but has taken a while to get distribution and a wide release. Some doubted it would ever hit theaters, but it is slated for release in the US on September 26, 2014.
