Boston Calling 2014 Recap: Modest Mouse

by Photo of Ross Bernhardt

Isaac Brock and company helped provide a fitting end to a fantastic festival.

Modest Mouse was the perfect choice to close out the Boston Calling Music Festival this past May. With the perfect amount of mainstream appeal from their album Good News For People Who Love Bad News with hit song "Float On" and indie integrity, they strike just the right balance between music snobs and Top 40 fans. There was something for everyone in the set, and the near hour and a half they played was a fantastic display of their musical chops.

Isaac Brock still has so much fire in his vocals, and seeing him unleash his powerful bellows for the first time was quite an experience. His voice holds up extremely well considering how taxing many of his songs must be vocally, and the rest of the band around him sounded fantastic. The group has too many great songs to run through all the ones you would want to hear, but they still played all the big ones like "Float On" and "Dashboard" as well as choice selections like "The World At Large" and "Fire It Up."

From the sound of it, they played some new songs during their encore, or at least tracks that were unfamiliar to my ears.

But the best part of having a band like Modest Mouse end the festival is just how much you can cut loose and enjoy the last set to their music. Their music has this rambunctious quality to hits all the right notes after three days of music. While it might not seem like the sexiest choice, Modest Mouse was certainly the ideal choice to close things out at Boston Calling.

Tickets and passes are on sale for the September edition of Boston Calling with The National, Lorde and Nas with The Roots. For more information, head over to the festival website.
