Giants/Colts on Sunday Night Had Everything [Videos]

In this article…

Preseason games in the NFL are usually tough to watch. The top players usually don't play too much because teams don't want their best guys injured in meaningless games. That leaves a bunch of late-round picks, un-drafted free agents and journeymen players just trying to make a roster. They all give it their best, but the results are usually sloppy and far from pretty.

That was very much the case on Sunday night when the Indianapolis Colts took on the New York Giants. The starters only played a little longer than a quarter, and from then on it was left to the backups and roster hopefuls. But Reggie Wayne made sure the fans got their money's worth early on with a couple of spectacular catches, and Fox's Pam Oliver gave those watching at home a clip that will appear on blooper reels for years to come.

We'll start with the good plays. Both of Wayne's tremendous catches came on the same drive. The first was on a short route in the flat. Quarterback Andrew Luck threw a laser that Wayne reached up and grabbed one-handed, like it was nothing extraordinary or anything.

The next play required some lucky tips and bounces, but showed that good things usually happen when you throw the ball to Wayne. Luck was hit as he attempted to throw a pass to Wayne heading for the end zone. It ended up short, heading right for the grasps of Giants cornerback Aaron Ross. But Ross stumbled, and when the ball hit him, he ended up batting it towards the end zone where Wayne was waiting. Wayne tapped it up in the air and then recovered to make the diving catch along the right sideline for the touchdown.

Should it have been an interception? Yes. But if not for Wayne's great hands, instincts and athleticism, that could have been an incomplete pass instead of a score.

Next, Pam Oliver provided the humor for the evening when she took an errant throw from Colts backup QB Chandler Harnish. And it's only funny because she was a such a trooper and finished the rest of the game. I give her a ton of credit, though. If that throw had hit me square in the face, I might have taken the rest of the night off.

If these plays don't get you excited for football's return, I'm really not sure what will.
