NHL Schedule Released, Players To Participate in Winter Olympics

Today, the NHL released their schedule for the 2013-2014 regular season as they came to terms with the Olympic Committee. There was some debate over the impact that the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia would have on the regular season, but as of today, schedules are set and now players and fans are looking forward to the upcoming season.

It has been decided that the NHL will pause regular season play for about two weeks in February (9-26) in order to allow those selected for the Olympic team to have the time to participate in the international event. The hockey teams participating the Winter Olympics are Russia, Slovakia, the United States, Slovenia, Finland, Canada, Norway, Austria, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland and Latvia. There will be at least one NHL player present on each of the 12 teams.

With the 2013-2014 season come new divisions in the NHL. The Atlantic, Central, Pacific and brand new Metropolitan divisions split up the league into different segments which is sure to make things interesting. The new divisions are as follows:

Eastern Conference

Metropolitan: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals

Atlantic: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs

Western Conference

Central: Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators, Winnipeg Jets

Pacific: Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Suns, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks

Eastern Conference teams will play 30 games against teams in their division and 24 games teams outside of their division. They will also play 28 interconference games.

Western Conference teams will play 29 times against other teams in their division and 21 games against teams outside of their division. Western conference teams will play 32 interconference games.

This will ensure that every team plays a game in every NHL city at least once.

The regular season begins Tuesday October 1, 2013 at 7pm ET when the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Montreal Canadiens, who will have home ice. The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals face off in Chicago at the United Center at 8 p.m. ET. Finally, at 10 p.m. ET on opening night, the Edmonton Oilers will play the Winnipeg Jets in Edmonton.

Also, along with the Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 1, 2014, five more outdoor games will take place during the regular season. They are:

The Anaheim Ducks vs. the Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium (January 25)

The New Jersey Devils vs. the New York Rangers at Yankee Stadium (January 26)

The New York Islanders vs. the New York Rangers at Yankee Stadium (January 29),

The Pittsburgh Penguins vs. the Chicago Blackhawks, Soldier Field (March 1)

The Ottawa Senators vs. the Vancouver Canucks, BC Place (March 2)

With the exciting new division added at the start of this year's season plus extra hockey action at the Winter Olympics in Sochi this coming Februrary and outdoor hockey events, it is hard to deny that this year is going to be a great year for hockey both nationally and internationally.
