Gennady Golovkin Proves Himself Once Again

In this article…

Three rounds. That's all it took for the knockout artist Gennady Golovkin to stop Matthew Macklin and retain his WBA and IBO middleweight championship.

Golovkin earned his 14th straight knockout, improving his record to (27-0) with 24 knockouts.

The build-up for this fight was viewed as a test for Golovkin. Most critics critiqued Golovkin, also known as "GGG", for not fighting recognizable opponents. In the words of many boxing critics, this was his first real test.

Everyone expected the Irish warrior, Macklin, who gave the number one middleweight in the world Sergio Martinez a run for his money, to provide a tough match-up for the undefeated Golovkin.

However, from the opening bell Golovkin's power seem to have intimated Macklin. The Irish fighter promised to be a come forward, believing his experience would lead him to triumph over the younger Golovkin. Early in the fight Macklin seemed to be on survival mode, doing the opposite of what he said he would do. GGG kept on coming forward from the opening round, landing an outstanding 52% of his power punches. In round number three, Golovkin saw an open shot to the body and took advantage of the relatively defensive Macklin.

With less then two minutes left in the third round, Golovkin landed a colossal left hand to the body that immediately dropped Macklin to the canvas. In obvious pain, Macklin failed to make it to his feet before the count of ten--even taking a few extra seconds to get up after the fight was over. With this win, Golovkin continued his domination in the sport of boxing.
