Yasiel Puig Is Taking the MLB By Storm

Puig has put on a show since being called up to the Majors but does he deserve an All-Star selection?

In this article…

The Los Angeles Dodgers look to have the second coming of “Fernando-Mania” in outfielder Yasiel Puig. The Dodgers outfield has captivated the baseball world with his play since being called up from the minor leagues June 3rd. The Dodgers, still in last place in the National League West, have quickly become the marquee team that they thought they would be coming into the season.

None of this would have been possible had he not been able to escape Cuba. Puig's journey here as a defector is something of note as well. It is a very dangerous and risky proposition to try and escape from Cuba. Check out Jeff Passan's article describing the trip Puig took to come to America as told by the Coast Guard crew that came across them.

Puig has been on a torrid pace since getting the call-up and doesn't look like he'll be slowing down anytime soon. In only 26 games, Puig has gotten the attention of everyone around the baseball world. So far Puig only has 101 major league at-bats but his numbers in those at-bats are rivaled by very few over the time span. He has 44 hits, good for a .436 batting average in addition to a .467 on-base percentage. He is slugging an outstanding .713 as he has five doubles, one triple and seven home runs. He has 19 runs scored and 16 RBIs to add to his stat line as well. Puig is a threat on the base paths as well, evident by his four stolen bases.

A debut of this stature has been done only once previously in Major League Baseball history, and that was by Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio. Puig and DiMaggio are the only two players with 40 hits and four home runs in their first month in the majors. Puig’s 44 hits in June are second only to DiMaggio’s 48 in 1936, but are the most for a Dodger rookie. It is hard to imagine that Puig would not have challenged the 48 of DiMaggio had he played the 1st and 2nd of June as well.

The 22-year old Cuban defector was not even familiar with who DiMaggio was when approached about it after a game but was honored to be on the same list as the Yankee legend.

Puig also puts on a show when he is in the field. He already has a number of highlight plays throwing base runners out trying to snag an extra base on hits. Puig has the looks of a five-tool player and looks to have many All-Star game appearances in his future. The question is, will those All-Star appearance start this season?

There are people clamoring for Puig to be placed on the All-Star team this season in one way or another. It is unlikely that coaches and players will vote in a player with barely a month in the majors, but at the same time the All-Star game is a showcase of the best players MLB has to offer; right now there are not many that look better than Puig. The All-Star festivities are a time for fans and if they want to see Puig there MLB should try their hardest to make it happen.

If Puig is not added by the coaches and players, he can be added as the player on the last vote in ballot MLB holds for the last roster spot. No matter whom the other representatives for the National League are Puig should win that in a landslide. Since being called up he has been a stalwart in MLB’s top 10 trending topics, usually placing first or second.

If he is not asked to participate in the game having him in the Home Run Derby would be another option to get him included. NL Captain David Wright has yet to name who will be his teammates on the squad so there is a chance Puig could get the call there as well.

It is fair to question Puig’s credentials for being in the All-Star game since he has only played a month, but his stats are outstanding thus far. His popularity with fans and the media would also be a tough thing to keep out of an All-Star break that needs as much talent and excitement as possible. Not having him in some capacity would disappoint a lot of people, but it's difficult to say he doesn't deserve it.
