George Karl Let Go By Denver After Disappointing Post-Season

In this article…

Although the Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl was named NBA Coach of the Year, the administration has decided that time is up for Karl, who has been coaching the team for the past 9 seasons. Karl will not be returning

This year, Karl lead his young team to a 57-win season. He also coached the Nuggets to win 33 out of their last 40 games of the 82 game regular season (only 41 teams in NBA history have won at least 31 of their last 40). This is not the first time Karl had coached a team that was able to do this, but it was also not the first time that his team, which had performed well throughout the season, failed to move past the first round of playoffs. Out of the six teams that followed the trend of having a spectacular season and falling short in the first round of playoffs, Karl has been the coach of three. Last year, Denver was beaten in the first round of playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers. Similarly, this year they lost in close games to the Golden State Warriors.

ESPN Analyst Stephen A. Smith wasn't surprised by the Nuggets' decision to do away with Karl. In an interview that appeared on SportsCenter, Smith talked about why he thought the franchise made the decision it did.

"The reality of the situation is that George Karl is an exceptional coach in this game, we all know it... But you also have to take into consideration not only that it was a change in terms of the executive, with their former GM now in Toronto, but also you got bounced out in the first round again. And at some point in time it's not really about whether or not you can coach, it's not even about your success overall. [There] just comes a point in time where some people believe that a new voice is required. And I think that when you look at George Karl that's fair to say in this situation."

Now Denver is searching for a new coach to head the young team of players for the 2013-2014 season and sources say that Denver may make an effort to obtain head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, Lionel Hollins, whose contract is up on June 30. There is also speculation that Karl might end up in Memphis, but only time will tell.
