You Should Know: Patrick Corbin

Matt Harvey is getting magazine covers, but Corbin deserves consideration as baseball’s top young pitcher.

You Should Know: Patrick Corbin

Matt Harvey is getting plenty of attention for his pitching exploits this year with the New York Mets, and rightfully so. Harvey is having an outstanding year with New York, especially at just 24 years of age.

But Patrick Corbin of the Arizona Diamondbacks is having an equally impressive season, if not more so. Corbin made 17 starts last season for the Diamondbacks, making his debut when he was just 22. He struggled but still put in decent numbers, going 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA. He showed promise in several of those starts, including an eight-inning outing against the San Francisco Giants late in the season.

This year, Corbin has put it all together and has started the season on a tear. In nine games started, Corbin is 7-0 with a 1.44 ERA, 18 walks, 51 strikeouts, a WHIP of 0.979 and has allowed just 10 earned runs on the season. His ERA puts him behind just one other pitcher in baseball: Clayton Kershaw. That guy is pretty good.

Last night, Corbin pitched his first complete game, going the distance against the Colorado Rockies in a 5-1 win. Corbin struck out 10 and allowed just four baserunners in start. It was the latest in a long line of quality starts for Corbin, who has gone at least six innings in all his starts this year and has yet to allow more than two runs.

Let's compare Corbin's numbers with Harvey's to get a look at just how impressive both have been. Harvey has made nine starts as well. He has posted a 5-0 record, an ERA of 1.55, 14 walks, 68 strikeouts and a league-leading 0.723 WHIP. Harvey has gone at least seven innings in all but two starts and has an even more impressive complete game under his belt (the near-perfect game against the White Sox).

I'm not here to say that Patrick Corbin is a better pitcher than Matt Harvey. That probably isn't the case. But Corbin is having just as fine a season with half of the publicity (on a team that is in first place out in the NL West, no less). You should get to know Patrick Corbin because, like Harvey, he will likely be a fixture in Cy Young discussions for years to come.
