Live: JD & The Straight Shot and Joe Walsh

James Dolan and his band opened for the legendary Joe Walsh at the Paramount Theatre.

In this article…

Monday night at the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, Long Island, the legendary Joe Walsh headlined a show as part of his Analog Tour. His opening band for the show, JD & The Straight Shot, might come as a surprise to some. JD & The Straight Shot is led by none other than James Dolan, the same James Dolan that is President/CEO of Cablevision and Executive Chairman of MSG (where he oversees management of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, in addition to other things).

But Dolan did not look like a businessman up on stage Monday night. Dolan traded the suit and tie for bluejeans and a cowboy hat (or at least a hat with musical affectations, anyway). So how is Dolan the musician? Not bad, actually. Dolan handles himself well as the front man for the group. His voice isn't the greatest, but I don't think his songs are as much about the vocals as they are the stories they tell. In that regard, Dolan is quite competent as a storyteller.

The band around Dolan is an incredible group of musicians that have played with some of the top artists in pop music: guitarists Marc Copely (B.B. King) and Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Amos Lee), keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm), drummer Shawn Pelton (Rod Stewart, Pink, Daryl Hall, Buddy Guy), bassist Zev Katz (Aretha Franklin, Elton John), and violinist Lorenza Ponce (Sheryl Crow, Ben Folds, Bon Jovi). That's a remarkable collection of talent, and the end result is incredibly enjoyable music with plenty of divergences into solos and back-and-forths.

The overall experience of JD & The Straight Shot is something I couldn't totally relate to musically, but I can certainly see the appeal. It seems like great music to turn on during a warm summer night.
