Video: Renaldo Balkman Chokes Teammate

by Photo of Ross Bernhardt

The former first round pick of the Knicks had a meltdown while playing in the Philippines.

Back in 2011, when NBA bust Adam Morrison was playing over in Serbia, he got into a scuffle with several members of the opposing team during one game after he thought he was on the receiving end of some overly-physical play. The incident seemed to endear him to the crazed fans and his teammates, as his fiery, competitive spirit got the crowd going. While I never endorse fighting, but this is one of those plays that's indicative of what can bring teams together.

This next story of a former NBA player getting into it while playing overseas is an example of what can bring teams apart. Renaldo Balkman, the guy that was taken just ahead of Rajon Rondo back in the 2006, landed in the Philippines as an import this season with the Petron Blaze. In the waning seconds of their loss to the Alaska Aces in the PBA Commissioner's Cup, Balkman choked one of his teammates, Arwind Santos, after getting involved in several altercations with referees, assistant coaches and teammates just before.

Balkman thought he was fouled on the play before, and wanted to discuss it intensely with the officials. His coaches and teammates wisely got between the two, but Balkman absolutely lost it. He shoved away anyone that tried to stop him, even his teammates, and when Santos tried to push back Balkman grabbed at his neck.

Balkman only began to calm down when someone from the stands, probably a friend, came onto the court. Balkman played for the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets during his six years in the NBA, and his, this bears repeating, he was selected right before Rajon Rondo in the 2006 draft. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about the Knicks front office during the mid-2000s, I don't know what will.
