Watch: "YOLO" Digital Short, Plus More SNL News

by Photo of Ross Bernhardt

The Lonely Island returned last week, Justin Bieber pulls double duty this weekend, and more hosting news.

This is a poor effort on my part to maintain some semblance of "timeliness" in regards to this particular video, but I still feel it's worth sharing even though it's a few days old. Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island made their triumphant return during last weekend's SNL with the Digital Short "YOLO." Adam Levine sang the hooks, the second time he's done so for a Digital Short (the hilarious "I Ran" about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) and this time got to throw in some acting during the pre-produced skit as well. The sight gag of Levine and the crew with no teeth gets me every single time.

Kendrick Lamar, the musical guest, chimed in with a verse about fiscal responsibility that really brought the interesting take on the YOLO motto together. SNL has been pretty great with the pre-produced material this year without Samberg, but it was certainly refreshing to see them back.

In two Saturdays, another musician will try his hand at hosting. Justin Bieber will pull double-duty as host and musical guest. Bieber has been on the show as musical guest before (a Tina Fey-hosted episode) and made a cameo in the 100th Digital Short, but after last week's disaster with Levine, I'm very bearish on how this is going to play out. Bieber's a natural performer, but I doubt he really has the comedic chops to handle himself effectively on a show like this. I'm expecting the worst.

Thankfully, the palate should be cleansed the following Saturday with Christoph Waltz and Alabama Shakes as the host/musical pairing. That's a duo that could really knock a show out of the park. Waltz is a naturally funny actor (as seen in his two Oscar turns Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained) and that Austrian accent will be good for laughs just as it is. And Alabama Shakes is going to absolutely bring the heat to the stage as musical guests. Brittany Howard's voice might not fit in Rockefeller Center.
