Sloane Stephens Defeats Serena Williams in Australia

In this article…

Sloane Stephens grew up with a poster of Serena Williams adorning her wall. After her three-set upset over the third-seeded yesterday to make it to the Australian Open semifinals, Stephens said she'll have to put up a new poster: one of herself.

After dropping the first set to Williams, Stephens was on the right side of fortune when Williams stumbled with back spasm. Already playing on a bum ankle, Williams seemed poised to finish things out midway through the second set. After a winner at the net, she came up lame. Williams battled, but ended up losing the set to Stephens.

Neither player could really seize momentum early in the third, but Stephens finally capitalized on Williams' lack of mobility later on. At just 19, Stephens had the stamina and the power to pull out the match. She had enough energy to look this enthused and shocked as she was on the verge of breaking her idol for the set and a trip to the semifinals:

That's the future of women's tennis in America, folks, and that future sure is excited. Stephens is the complete package: power, finesse, athleticism, and charisma to boot. Stephens will meet defending champion Victoria Azarenka in her next match, and we'll get to see if she can carry this huge piece of momentum with her to her first Grand Slam final in what should be a career filled with them.
