Check out DJ Earworm’s annual mega-mashup “Shine Brighter”

Listen: DJ Earworm's

DJ Earworm's annual mashups always sneak up on me, and it's always a pleasant surprise. The top songs of this year have been, as per usual, masterfully woven together into an intricate mix that pastiches bits and pieces of the biggest hits into one song – this year titled “Shine Brighter.” The resulting song does an excellent job of tracing the trending music of 2012 and drawing lyrical and thematic connections between songs that speak to pop culture.

Artists featured in this year's mashup include but are not limited to: Gotye, Fun., Rihanna, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, and Ke$ha. Ke$ha's “Die Young” provides the backbone for the song's beat, making up a large portion of the chorus along with Katy Perry's “Wide Awake” and Bruno Mars' “Locked out of Heaven,” which bookends the project. Carly Rae Jepson's “Call Me Maybe” along with Psy's “Gangam Style,” two of the year's biggest hits, are featured as well in the mix but only slightly, which comes as a bit of a surprise considering their popularity.

Apparently Earworm, whose real name is Jordan Roseman, wanted to focus on more than danceability in order to identify deeper thematic connections between songs. “I looked through all the lyrics to find what common elements there might have been. …These three concepts more or less became the verse/pre-chorus/chorus of the song,” he wrote to CNN. These common themes ended up being darkness, revelation, and transformation, which all seem to be prevalent in the resulting song -- I guess "Call Me Maybe" and "Gangam Style" just don't exemplify these things quite well enough for Earworm.

I enjoy this year's rendition, though I'm not so sure the the theme is cohesive or deep enough to justify snubbing our girl Carly. Does Earworm's latest mashup transcend your average mix up and tell a deeper story? Watch the video below and see for yourself:
