NBA Dunk of the Night

by Photo of Ross Bernhardt

Byron Mullens absolutely posterized LaMarcus Aldridge during Charlotte’s OT loss.

The Charlotte Bobcats have been one of the more pleasant surprises of the NBA season.  After 16 games, the Bobcats sit in third place in the Southeast Division at 7-9, and before their current four-game losing streak they were 7-5.  Kemba Walker has really taken a big step forward in his second season, rookies Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Jeffrey Taylor are playing well, Ben Bordon is contributing, and they have done this primarily without Gerald Henderson.

But the most pleasant surprise for this surprising team has to be Byron, the artists formerly known as BJ, Mullens.  The fourth-year big man out of Ohio State is experiencing his finest year to date, putting up a solid 12.9/8.4 a game as the starting center.  At 7' and 275 pounds, Mullens is an extremely athletic big that seems to be coming into his own now that he has been given a chance to play (even though he is shooting too many threes).

Last night, Mullens showed off that athleticism with an absolutely filthy (if not sort of awkward) dunk over LaMarcus Aldridge.  After gathering the long miss from his own missed three, Mullens sprinted into the lane and took off at Aldridge, who was waiting to try and take a charge.  Mullens wouldn't be denied, though, and threw down with ferocity.

Charge?  Maybe, but probably not.  Awkward?  Most definitely.  But ultimately, the dunk came in vain as Charlotte blew a fourth quarter lead and ended up losing in OT to the Trail Blazers.  Still, that is one fine dunk.
