USA Advances to Semis with Convincing Win Over Australia

In this article…

LeBron James had the ever first triple double (11 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists) in Olympic history. His record-breaking performance, along with Kobe Bryant's 2nd half prowess, lead Team USA cruise to an easy 119-86 victory over Australia.

The US has had slow starts in most of these Olympic games, but that was not the case yesterday when they outscored Australia 28-21 in each of the first two quarters. Team USA had a 14 point lead at halftime as well as after three quarters of play.

The Americans pulled away in the 4th, outscoring Australia 35-16 thanks in large part to Kobe Bryant, who caught fire. Bryant scored 20 points, all of which came in the 2nd half. He ended up hitting 6 of his 10 3-point field goal attempts.

Chris Paul has been quietly great, if that's possible, throughout these Olympics. Most of his contributions are not shown in the box score, except for yesterday. Paul scored only seven points, but he was a workhorse on the defensive end of the floor and accumulating five steals.

Deron Williams made a significant contribution off the bench by scoring 18 points. He was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Carmelo Anthony continues to have a tremendous Olympic run, adding 17 points of his own in yesterdays game against Australia.

Team USA will play Argentina in the semi-finals tomorrow, Friday August 10 at 4 PM EDT. The Americans will look to beat the Argentinians for the 3rd time in three weeks.

There is some bad blood between the two teams, especially during the game this past Monday. Argentinian forward/center Luis Scola got into a verbal altercation with Mike Krzyzewski and the rest of the US team. However, what stood out the most was the "cheap shot" to the groin Carmelo Anthony received from Argentinian forward Facundo Campazzo.

The USA men's basketball team is not expected to play for the bronze medal, so falling short against Argentina on Friday would be a huge disappointment. That being said, I don't foresee a loss to Argentina occurring with the way they've been playing thus far.
