Beck Releases Details On New Do-It-Yourself Album

In this article…

Beck fans have been eagerly awaiting an album announcement for several years now, and today they got one... or something similar to one at least. This morning, the California musician revealed that his follow-up to 2008's Modern Guilt will take the form of Beck Hansen's Song Reader, and will be released through McSweeney's in December. That's right, a song reader, meaning that all twenty of the new tracks will be released only as sheet music that the customer must play themselves if they want to hear. According to a press release:

The songs here are as unfailingly exciting as you’d expect from their author, but if you want to hear “Do We? We Do,” or “Don’t Act Like Your Heart Isn’t Hard,” bringing them to life depends on you.

The new album is meant to be an "experiment" exploring "what an album can be at the end of 2012" and promises to be "as visually absorbing as a dozen gatefold LPs put together."

So, what exactly can participants in this experiment expect? Well, each 9.5"x12.5" hardcover carrying case includes plenty of original art by artists such as Marcel Dzama (cover art for Beck's Guerro), Josh Cochran, and Jessica Hisch among others, as well as an introduction by Jody Rosen (Slate, The New York Times), and a foreward by Beck himself. Within the Reader's 108 pages, fans will also find twenty full-color song booklets (two instrumentals, eighteen with original lyrics), each with an illustrated cover.

Luckily for less musically inclined fans, McSweeney's will post customers' and select musicians' (hopefully Beck?) renditions of the music on their website for all to enjoy following the Song Reader's release.
