According a tweet by The Associated Press' Tim Reynolds, Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade called USA coaches Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski today to remove himself from the 2012 USA Olympic team roster.
Wade plans on getting surgery on his left knee which bothered him throughout the regular season and playoffs. Wade had his knee drained in the regular season and in the playoffs prior to Game 3 of the Heat's series with the Indiana Pacers.
Wade is coming off his second NBA Championship this season as the Heat defeated the Thunder last week in five games to capture the title. Despite the ailing knee, Wade averaged 22.8 points per game the playoffs this season.
The United States looks to defend their 2008 Olympic Gold Medal this summer in London beginning with training camp next week in Las Vegas. The U.S squares off against France July 29 in the first game of the tournament. Wade led the team in scoring during the 2008 Gold Medal run in Beijing averaging 16 points per game.
