Pro Baseball Home Run Derby
Performing now!
It appears as though National League Home Run Derby captain Matt Kemp is just as much of a fan of Giancarlo Stanton's immense power as everyone else is, selecting him to compete in the 2012 Home Run Derby July 9 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Kemp, who was named captain of the event after leading the NL in home runs last year, hasn't officially announced any names, but Stanton made it public Wednesday that he would be among those competing.
Stanton, whose long balls are quickly becoming legendary, has been a popular home run derby choice amongst fans for some time now. His scoreboard shattering grand slam against Jamie Moyer quickly cemented him as one of the game's best young power hitters, and clearly one of the few bright spots on a Marlins team that has greatly disappointed thus far this year. Despite hitting only 17 home runs so far, good for twelfth in the league, there is no question that his raw power is among the best in the majors. Making his abilities only more impressive is the fact that he's still only 22, so his physical capabilities may not even be maxed out yet.
Though Stanton may be in, it appears that another young phenom will have to sit out this year's derby. Kemp announced that Bryce Harper would not be among those chosen to compete in Kansas City. Still only a teenager there will be many more derby's for Harper to compete in, so for the time being we'll just have to be content with watching Stanton hit ball after ball into Kauffman Stadium's waterfall come the ninth.
