Sidney Crosby and Pens Agree to $104 Million Contract

Apparently Sidney Crosby's recent battle with concussions haven't swayed Pittsburgh's commitment to the young center. The two sides agreed to an extension worth $104.4 million over the next 12 years.  Though Crosby can't officially sign until July 1st due to a stipulation in the collective bargaining agreement, Crosby figures to make an average of $8.7 million per year, the same amount he currently makes.

When on the ice, there is no question that Crosby is considered a top three player in the world, having won the Hart Memorial Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and the Sporting News NHL Player of the Year Award all in the same season.  Recently however, Crosby has only managed to play a total of 23 regular season games since a check by David Steckel at the 2011 Winter Classic that left him with a concussion.  Last year he put up only 37 points, twice having to miss extended periods of time while still experiencing post-concussion symptoms.

Crosby did come back strong at the end of last season however, including eight points in Pittsburgh's six playoff games.  There was never really a doubt that Crosby would re-sign with Pittsburgh, but there still have to be concerns about the 24-year-old's long term health and durability.  The Penguins just invested a ton of money into a guy that makes the home town crowd hold their breathe every time he steps on the ice for a shift, and more extended absences from their captain could be crippling for a team that was just embarrassed by Philadelphia in the playoffs.
