Brett Lawrie Loses It

Brett Lawrie Loses It

In this article…

Brett Lawrie is a very excitable baseball player.  The Toronto Blue Jays third baseman showed that on Tuesday night when he completely lost his mind after being called out on strikes.  Lawrie took issue with home plate umpire Bill Miller's strike zone, taking off for first after both the 3-1 and 3-2 pitchers.  Lawrie thought both were out of the zone, but Miller thought otherwise.

After he was punched out, Lawrie spun around and in his outrage threw his helmet towards Miller.  It spiked off the ground and hit Miller in the leg.  Lawrie was thrown out of the game, but that didn't stop him from going on a vicious tirade.  He looked like he was possessed.  Check it out in the video below.  You can't really see the location of the first call in question, but the 3-2 pitch is there.

I understand that it was a questionable strike call in a tight game, but that doesn't give Lawrie to go off the way he did.  There are more tasteful ways to communicate your grievances than throwing your helmet at the umpire and charging at him with a look that screams "I WANT BLOOD FOR THESE INJUSTICES!"  That kind of outburst borders on dangerous and violent, and there is no place for that.  I'm all for arguments between managers/players and umpires.  They are incredibly entertaining more often than not.  But when they go into this berserk territory, that's when things go from entertaining to scary.

Lawrie is a talented young player with a ton of potential.  He's only 22, and he definitely has some growing up to do, but that doesn't excuse his behavior.  He was suspended for four games, and he has appealed that suspension.  That way he can keep playing until there is the appeal hearing.  But the incident looks to have thrown Lawrie off his game, as he went 0-4 last night with two more strikeouts.  If we had a robot umpire to call balls and strikes, all of this could have been avoided.
