Tracy Morgan Performance Ignites Controversy

In this article…

"30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan is facing some trouble after repeatedly using homophobic jokes throughout his performance in Nashville, Tennessee last week.

During the comedian's performance at the Ryman Auditorium, he stated that  "Gay is something that kids learn from the media and programming," and if met with the possibility of his son being gay, he said that his son "better talk to him like a man and not in a gay voice," or he would be forced to stab him.

The Ryman Auditorium issued a statement following the June 3rd show, saying that  "The Ryman Auditorium regrets that people were offended by statements made by Tracy Morgan during his June 3 appearance.  The Ryman does not control the content presented by people appearing on its stage, nor does it endorse any of the views of, or statements made by, such persons."

Jarrett Barrios, President of  the  Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said that if the reports are indeed true,  "We call on him to remove these violently anti-gay remarks from his show and send a strong message that anti-gay violence is not something to joke about." The Human Rights Campaign is equally upset as well.

Morgan has issued an apology via The Advocate. The statement reads: “I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”

This is not the first time that Morgan has been under fire for homophobic jokes. In 2009, fans walked out of a Carnegie Hall performance when Morgan reportedly said that being gay was a "choice."
