The first head coaching casualty occurs not even two weeks into the season.

Paul Westphal Axed by Sacramento

In this article…

Paul Westphal, head coach of the Sacramento Kings, has been fired.  The Kings had gotten off to a 2-5 start this season and were 51-120 under Westphal during his two-plus seasons as coach.

This firing really comes as no surprise. The icing on the cake was Westphal's statement on New Year's Day where he openly claimed DeMarcus Cousins was demanding a trade and that he would be suspended because of it.  It was a bizarre move, and as Tom Ziller wrote that day, some real Wizard of Oz s-it was going on.  In making the statement, Westphal totally threw Cousins under the bus in an attempt to remove attention from himself.  That's not the mark of a good coach.

Although changing coaches likely won't fix things quickly, Sacramento needs to establish a new identity.  Perhaps Keith Smart, who is taking over, can give this team a much needed boost.
