Quarterback Bryce Petty makes a return for what will be his final season with the Bears, clearly one of college football's elite. A 2013 campaign of 4,200 yards and 46 touchdowns lifted the Bears to win the Big 12 Championship, its first ever. A freak athlete by nature, Petty’s size, athleticism, and physical talents have drawn comparisons to him being the most complete quarterback since Robert Griffin III, a former Bear.
Petty’s line of receivers will be without Clay Fuller for the start of the season, lost to a broken collarbone. Even so, Petty’s receiver corps is touted as one of college football’s best with Antwan Goodley, Levi Norwood, Corey Coleman, and Jay Lee out in the field. Shock Linwood looks ready to assume the role of starter at back after splitting time last season with Lache Seastrunk; and Devin Chafin also adding size and depth.
Art Briles touts his defensive line as one of the best in the Big 12 with Shawn Oakman, a transfer from Penn State, and Jamal Palmer to create a pass rushing tandem on opposing offenses. Also, backing the line is Andrew Billings, Beau Blackshear, Byron Bonds, Suleiman Masumbuko, and Javonte Magee. An area of concern would be in Baylor’s secondary when looking at their youth in the cornerback position. Chris Sanders, Tion Wright, Xavien Howard, Terrence Singleton, and Ryan Reid all players who have not proven themselves yet however, the Bears will have some time to prepare their secondary since they will not be tested up until October.
Baylor Football Schedule 2014
The Baylor Bears have the potential to go undefeated this season and sit atop of the Big 12 if their offense manages to click right away. A spot in the College Football Playoff will put them in the run for a championship assuming the Bears are able to avoid losses to Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State which would in turn be a nightmare of a season for them.
