Elza

Elzaby Mariette Monpierre, is the first narrative feature film by a female filmmaker from Guadeloupe, the West Indies. It tells the universal story of a family in turmoil. Elza is the first college graduate of the family but swiftly ruins her mother’s happiness by leaving Paris to return to Guadeloupe in search of a fleeting childhood memory and a father who abandoned her. It’s reported that 60% of African American and Caribbean Children are estranged from their fathers. A shocking number, given that in many cases these fathers are alive and have simply neglected their responsibility to their families. Is it a coincidence that in most cases, these communities have a history of slavery wherein the father is taken from his family unit and used as a breeder while watching the selling of his children to other plantation owners? This breathtaking film offers an insider’s view of a lush island culture, capturing the beauty and contradiction of this family drama with passion and perseverance. This compelling film offers hope for futuregenerations of fatherless children. Filmed in French with English subtitles, the film also includes music from French neo-folk-soul artistStévy Mahy.
