Former NHLers Killed in Plane Crash

The flight was carrying Russian powerhouse Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to the opening game of the season with Dinamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Among those on the flight were former New York Rangers Karel Rachunek and Alexander Karpovtsev, who played on the 1994 Stanley Cup winning team.

Newly hired team coach Brad McCrimmon, who was formerly an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings and 18-year NHL veteran, was also among the dead.

Alexander Vasyunov, who played a few games with the New Jersey Devils last season, was on board along with former NHL players Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins, Pavol Demitra and Josef Vasicek.

Officials said that player Alexander Galimov and a crewmember had survived the crash.The accident dealt a devastating blow to Russian hockey.

"We will do our best to ensure that hockey in Yaroslavl does not die, and that it continues to live for the people that were on that plane," said Russian Ice Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretyak.
