Todd Graham Leaves Pittsburgh With a Text on His Way to Fourth School Since '06

Todd Graham is a climber and, for the second time in his coaching career, has left a school for a better job after just one season.  Hired at Pitt on January 10, Graham is moving to Arizona State, his fourth head coaching position since 2006. Graham’s rise from Texas high schools to West Virginia to Tulsa to Rice to Tulsa to Pitt and now to Arizona State since 2000 has been meteoric. Ignore the kids left in his wake.

Sure, pulling a Lane Kiffin happens all the time in college sports. It's an unfortunate reality of the business...

But this isn’t so much about Graham leaving, although leaving a school after just one ( mediocre) season isn’t a good look for a guy who especially needs people to genuinely believe he cares about them. This is about how Graham left after that one mediocre season, less than a year after being quoted as preaching “trust” and the importance of “mak[ing] a difference in young people’s [lives] at his introductory press conference:

Pitt’s players were informed in a statement from Graham that was sent via text by assistant athletic director/football operations Blair Philbrick.

“I have resigned my position at Pitt in the best interest of my family to pursue the head coaching position at Arizona State,” Graham said. “Coaching there has always been a dream of ours and we have family there. The timing of the circumstances have prohibited from telling you this directly. I now am on my way to Tempe to continue those discussions. God Bless. Coach Graham.”

What a ****.

I know most of you don't have to be convinced that the NCAA is a corrupt and hypocritical organization. But come on, coaches can jump from program to program with no consequences while players are forced to sit out a year if they want to change schools? Even if the coach who recruited them leaves? It's just not right.
