USA Today:

Baseball's free agent derby is about to gain some definition, but the first big move may involve taking a marquee player off the 2012 market.

Matt Kemp and the Los Angeles Dodgers are close to reaching an agreement on an eight-year, $160 million extension, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Such a move would mark the first glimmer of hope for the franchise since it was waylaid in recent years by the ownership of Frank McCourt, who steered the club into bankruptcy court before finally agreeing to sell this month.

Kemp won a Gold Glove and is as good a candidate as any to win the National League MVP award. He led the N.L. in home runs, runs batted in, and runs.

Overall, he hit .399/.586/.986 with 39 HRs, 126 RBI and 40 SB.
