Ryan Fitzpatrick Signs Long-Term Deal With Bills

Pro Football Talk :

The Bills and Fitzpatrick have agreed to a new long-term contract extension, the Associated Press reports.

There’s no word on the value of the contract, but for several weeks we’ve been hearing that Fitzpatrick was getting close to a deal that would put him solidly within the “second-tier” quarterback club, at around $10 million a year, though not in the “first-tier,” where Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are averaging $18 million a year.

This seems like a big commitment for a largely unproven quarterback. Fitzpatrick, 28, threw for 3,000 yards for the first time last season and has 56 touchdowns and 48 interceptions during his career. He's been very good this season and it will be a welcome change for Buffalo to have some stability at quarterback, but I would like to see more from him before making the investment.

There does seem to be a recent trend in the NFL of inking quarterbacks to questionable deals.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Matt Cassel to a long term deal despite only starting for one year in college and the pros combined.

The Arizona Cardinals traded for Kevin Kolb and signed him to a five-year, 64 million dollar deal, even though he only threw for 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions before joining the team.

Even the unquestionably talented Michael Vick received a shaky deal from the Eagles. Vick signed a 100 million dollar deal with 40 million guaranteed. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out because of his injury history and Philadelphia's struggles early this year.
