Jose Reyes to the Disabled List?

The New York Mets put the wheels in motion toward placing shortstop Jose Reyes on the disabled list late Wednesday. Team officials arranged for corner infielder/outfielder Nick Evans to fly to Los Angeles from Triple-A Buffalo, multiple team sources told ESPNNewYork.com.

This is obviously a tough blow for the Mets, who are 6.5 games behind the Braves in the wild card race. New York has surprised without Reyes, going 4-0 since his injury. But it's unrealistic to think they can stay in the playoff hunt without him for long. Both Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson acknowledged that this is a critical stretch for the 2011 team; they'll face 7 straight All Star pitchers starting tonight against Clayton Kershaw. On the bright side, injuries like this could lower Jose's price after the season, giving the Mets a better chance to re-sign him. But it's a pretty weak consolation prize; Met fans want to see Reyes on the field as much as possible. The most frustrating part of the whole thing might be the Mets' medical staff misdiagnosing yet another player. When the injury originally occurred, the possibility of the disabled list was thought to be slim at best. Now, he'll miss the crucial Phillies series after the break.

Mets Beat Reporter David Lennon confirms that Reyes has been put on the disabled list.
