Who is the favorite to win the Vezina Trophy for Best Goalie?

2015 NHL Midseason Awards: Vezina Trophy

With every team at or right around the 41-game mark, lets take a look at the frontrunners to win the Vezina Trophy for Best Goalie:

Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers

Like his team, Lundqvist had a slow start to this season. Chalk that up to the short summer following a run to the Stanley Cup Final. As the Rangers began to heat up as a team, so did their all-world goaltender. He has won 11 of his past 12 starts, giving up a paltry 1.58 goals per game and stopping an insane 94% of shots faced during that span. Rinne’s inspiring return and incredible stats may keep Lundqvist from his second Vezina, but he is the best goalie in the world, bar none.

Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators

Rinne has been the backbone of a surprisingly successful Predators team. He has solidified the back end, allowing coach Peter Laviolette to implement his new system without fear of mistakes costing the team goals. He leads the league in wins with 28, is second in goals against average (1.98) and third in save percentage (93). Those statistics scream Vezina Trophy, and the fact that he is doing this after last year’s injury troubles is truly remarkable.

Roberto Luongo, Florida Panthers

The Panthers were not supposed to be very good. A new head coach, an abundance of young, unproven talent was not supposed to succeed so quickly. No one told goaltender Roberto Luongo such things. He has put the team on his back and has them in playoff contention at the All-Star break. He has 17 wins to go along with top ten numbers in both goals against average (2.23) and save percentage (92.7). After the tumultuous years in Vancouver, Luongo has to be ecstatic to be back playing in South Florida.

Notables: Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens; Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins

My Vote: Pekka Rinne
