The epicness of The Walking Dead arrived in NY/NJ with Walker Stalker Con at the Meadowlands

Walker Stalker Con Takes Over New Jersey

It’s been a couple weeks since the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead and we’re already dying for what’s next. However, every mid-season break has its silver lining and with that came Walker Stalker Con; the convention solely dedicated to bringing together fans and the cast of The Walking Dead.

The two-day convention that took place at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in New Jersey was filled with vendors, zombified fans, celebrity panels and cast members of The Walking Dead. Though the event has only been around for a solid year since its inception last November in Atlanta, it has quickly grown to be one of the most anticipated and talked about events connected with The Walking Dead.

Walker Stalker Con is a convention spin-off of the podcast “The Walker Stalkers”, hosted by James Frazier and Eric Nordhoff. The duo started the podcast after a trip to the set of The Walking Dead in Georgia, and hold bi-weekly podcasts during each season of the show. Now the convention takes place in multiple cities across the country several times a year. And with the incorporation of major cast members from the show into panels and meet-and-greets, the convention has truly become an event driven by fans.

On the first day of the convention, celebrity meet-and-greets were key. Picture every major cast member from The Walking Dead (even from previous seasons), with the exception of Andrew Lincoln (Rick), Danai Guirra (Michonne), and Melissa McBride (Carol), plus cast members from the iconic movies Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead and Gremlins. Then picture being able to take selfies, get autographs and hug them. Now throw in panels from AMC's Comic Book Men, IronE Singleton (T-Dog), and Emily Kinney (Beth). Lastly toss in the fact that tickets for the day were completely sold out to about 7,000 people, many of whom were dressed as their favorite characters and zombies. Plus all The Walking Dead merchandise you can think of.

Congratulations, you've just experienced Day 1.

On Day 2 of the most spectacular show on earth, panels were priority as several cast members and celebs took the stage to take fans questions and shell out info. Of the seven panels for the day, three stood out in regards to crowd response.

The first panel (which will affectionately be called Blast from the Zombie Past) was Night of the Living Dead. Actors Judith O’Dea, Russell Streiner and Kyra Schon (who played Barbara, Johnny, and Karen respectively) from George A. Romero’s 1968 zombie classic, took the stage to talk about what being in the iconic film meant to them over 40 years ago and how it’s affected the zombie universe now.

The second panel, like the first, highlighted another Romero classic, Day of the Dead. Lori Cardille (Sarah), Terry Alexander (John), and Howard Sherman (Bub the Zombie) joined The Walking Dead’s Special Effects Director Greg Nicotero to discuss his Hollywood debut in special effects as well as what it was like to work with Romero on the continuation of the “Dead” Series.

Finally, stirring up the most residual feelings was the panel entitled “Judith’s Parents?” with Jon Bernthal (Shane) and Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori). The pair spoke about Judith’s questionable parentage, how the show would be different if Shane or Lori were still around, and how they thought the remaining cast would fair moving forward.

Overall, Walker Stalker Con was an amazing showcase of fans' adoration and appreciation for The Walking Dead. We got to witness fans geek out over their favorite celebs (granted we did geek out a bit ourselves). We also learned a lot more about the zombie-verse and pick up some really sweet merch. Will we do it again? Stay tuned...we might show up in a future zombified city near you.
