Yankees Show Interest in Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez

Following back to back poor starts from Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia, the New York Post is reporting that the Yankees have begun scouting and might be interested in trading for Colorado Rockies' starting pitcher Ublado Jimenez.

"Thursday night, Yankees scout Jay Darnell was in Denver to watch the right-handed Jimenez pitch well against the Brewers. He was one of six Yankees talent evaluators in major league parks Thursday watching the work of starters Matt Garza of the Cubs, Francisco Liriano of the Twins, Anibal Sanchez of the Marlins and Jeremy Guthrie of the Orioles, and Padres reliever Heath Bell."

As I discussed here and here, the back of the rotation is an issue the Yankees will need to address in the second half of the season. Personally, I felt the Yankees could look within and give Ivan Nova another shot in the rotation but this report makes it clear the Yankees are exploring options externally as well.

If the Yankees are to acquire Jimenez or one of these other starters it will probably cost them dearly in prospects. The Rockies would most likely want a pitching prospect and one of the Yankees' catching prospects in return for Jimenez. Currently the best pitchers in New York's farm system are Dellin Betances and Manuel Banuelos who are pitching for the AA Trention Thunder. The Yankees have two good catching prospects in Jesus Montero and Austin Romine. Montero was talked about in a potential deal for Cliff Lee during last year's trade deadline.

Jimenez has had a down year compared to his breakout season last year. He's 5-8 with a 4.08 ERA compared to 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA last season. He's only 27 years old though and has pitched better recently, keeping in mind half his starts come in hitter friendly Coors Field.

If I was the Yankees I would be patient as teams often try and make the Yankees overpay because they are normally willing to do so. There is no reason to outbid yourself should a trade market develop for Jimenez.

I really feel Nova deserves another shot but if the Yankees go the trade route I think a package of Romine and either Betances or Banuelos would be more than enough to surrender for a pitcher with potential but that has also struggled. That way the Yankees would hold on to top prospect Montero and one of their top pitching prospects.

The hot stove is definitely starting to heat up and if you want to see the Yankees this season be sure to check Charged.fm for the best seats in the house.
