DeMarcus Cousins Learns of Mike Malone's Firing Over Twitter

In this article…

Much of the modern news cycle churns through social media these days, especially Twitter. That's where I find a lot of my news, and it's also apparently where Sacramento Kings star DeMarcus Cousins found out that his coach was fired.

Cousins has missed the last nine games with a viral meningitis infection. Before Cousins' illness, Sacramento was 9-6. The team has not done well since then, going 2-7 and dropping to 11-13 overall. That was enough reason for the Kings to let head coach Mike Malone go after their most recent loss. Sam Amick of USA Today dropped the tweet that that revealed how Cousins learned about the firing:

Malone was in his second season with the Kings, and things were finally off to a fortuitous start for the franchise. Rudy Gay was in his first full season with the team, second-year guard Ben McLemore was playing well, and new point guard Darren Collison was having one of his best seasons as a pro. And then there was Cousins in the middle, putting up a monstrous 23.5 points and 12.6 rebounds per game to lead the team. It finally seemed like the team was reaching a turning point.

But instead, the coach gets the axe after a bad stretch. But, as Eric Freeman writes in the article above, there seemed to be a philosophical disagreement between Malone and ownership, including owner Vivek Ranadive and GM Pete D'Alessandro, about the vision and long-term plan of the team. I'm struggling to understand why the team would let go of the coach has so far gotten the best out of the franchise's best player (and other players), and we'll have to wait and see how this move impacts Cousins and the rest of the Kings moving forward. But the uphill climb the Kings are already facing in the Western Conference just became even more daunting.
