A lineup worthy of a sweet tooth.

Tinderbox Arts' CMJ Showcase 2014

Spirited away to a small room at the back of Pete's Candy Store was Tinderbox Arts' CMJ 2014 Showcase, starring a setlist of the quirkiest acts in Brooklyn. What stood out the most about this showcase was its shining girl power, as five of the six acts present were carried by strong leading ladies.

The Looking

The only act with a leading fella that night was The Looking, one of the few cover artists that were a joy to listen to. Taking classics such as "Wayfaring Stranger" and putting a new twist on it, Carter displayed a musicality and understanding of each piece that made them refreshing and new.

Janna Pelle

Starting off the "Reign of Women" was the quirky Janna Pelle. With eclectic piano melodies and sarcastically pleasant lyrics, Pelle kept the audience both laughing and tapping in sync. In the matter of one song, Pelle was able to rip the audience out of the calming pools of emotion left by The Looking into a downright maelstrom of crazy. And it was epic.

Alyson Greenfield

Keeping the light-hearted mood rolling was Alyson Greenfield as she jumped back and forth between every single genre known to humanity (and possibly a few new ones?). There was even a section of her set that involved synth piano and beatboxing, (a combination I thought was decreed as sacrilege by the Pope). Altogether, the performance felt like a musical rendition of the new Comedy Central show, Broad City - upbeat yet harshly satirical. Alyson left the entire audience with a smile on their faces.

Fiona Silver

THERE WAS A UKULELE! (Which meansI'm sold). Honestly, that was all I needed to consider her performance incredible, but thankfully Fiona Silver didn't stop there. She brought the soul to Pete's Candy Store. Better yet, she brought crooner country for one song (picture Amy Winehouse singing over a Garth Brooks track). (I'm slightly aroused?) Fiona's stage presence is the perfect callback to leading rock ladies of the past, specifically Cherie Currie of The Runaways.

Sylvana Joyce + The Moment

Before the night of the showcase, I had no idea what gypsy rock was. Now I can't get enough of it. Sylvana Joyce + The Moment were such a powerful presence that it opened my musical world up to a whole new experience. Shocking, sensual, captivating; Sylvana Joyce and the band were downright awesome. If The Looking was a pool of calm water and Janna Pelle a maelstrom, Sylvana Joyce is the tsunami that wipes out the entire main island of Japan in 2025.

Shayna Leigh

Closing out the night was the sensational Shayna Leigh. Embodying the everyday grind in her lyrics, It could be felt that Shayna was spilling her soul in front of us with each breath. It helped that she performed a small comedy routine along with her set, becoming friends with anyone in the room who would listen (which means everyone). With beautiful vocals and an infectious bubbliness, Leigh sent us out into the night to "drive" away our worries and just have fun (See what I did there? Oh god, I'm so sorry).
