With a five-game losing streak, how long is the leash for the Jets coach?

Could Tonight Be Rex Ryan's Last Game as a Jet?

Editor's Note: I really think it would be unfair for the Jets to let Rex Ryan go, especially with the team he's got this year. Geno Smith doesn't have the right pieces, and that isn't on him. - Ross

Tonight's Thursday Night Football pits an AFC East matchup between the division leading New England Patriots versus last place New York Jets in Foxborogh, MA.

Since their demolition on Monday Night Football by way of the Kansas City Chiefs in week 4, The New England Patriots have won their previous two games in convincing fashion, including a primetime beat down of the then undefeated Cincinnati Bengal in week 5. Tom Brady has looked as sharp as ever and the defense has also picked up the effort. It’s beginning to look as if the Patriots have refocused after a slow start and are again the favorites to win the AFC East.

The New York Jets yet again have started their season poorly. With a 1-3 home record and an 0-2 mark on the road, head coach Rex Ryan may be coaching for his job tonight. Questions still surround the starting quarterback job. Geno Smith may be on his way out of New York once his contract expires after a lack of progression in year two. Michael Vick, Geno’s backup, was sent into the game and did not know some of the play calls in the Jets massive defeat to the San Diego Chargers. He was unprepared. Both are prone to turn the ball over. The Jets quarterback situation is in shambles, and so is their offense as a whole.

But here's where this comes back to Rex Ryan. He's an excellent defensive coach, but has he developed one above average offensive player in his Jets tenure? In an offensive driven league, there is no more important position than Quarterback. Between drafting Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith, it looks as if Rex Ryan dropped the ball (no pun intended) on both quarterbacks. The Jets have a tall order in New England against the New England Patriots. Could tonight be the end of Rex Ryan’s tenure with the New York Jets if they suffer another big loss?
