Derek Jeter Gets Walk-Off Hit in Final Home Game

In this article…

Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling loves to use a particular phrase when something wild or wacky happens during a game: "You just can't predict sports."

That certainly rang true last night in the Bronx. But when the final scene in last night's game between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, Derek Jeter's final game at Yankee Stadium, presented itself, everyone was hoping for one outcome: Jeter as a hero one more time.

Jeter stepped into the batter's box one final time with a chance to win the game for the Yankees after Baltimore erased a two-run deficit in the top of the ninth. With a runner (Antoan Richardson) on second, Jeter sprayed a line drive on the first pitch he saw from Evan Meek. Nick Markakis fielded the ball quickly but still couldn't get the out at the plate. Jeter's hit won the game, 6-5.

Seriously, who could have predicted that kind of finish would happen for Jeter? For starters, closer David Robertson had to blow a three-run lead in the ninth (which he did after serving up two mammoth home runs to Adam Jones and Steve Pearce). A runner had to get on base and then get into scoring position for Jeter, due up third in the bottom half of the inning. Orioles manager Buck Showalter actually had to pitch to Jeter (he could have easily walked him to set up the double play), and then if all that didn't happen, Jeter still had to come through with a single (he struck out in a similar situation on Tuesday).

It was a pretty magical moment, and a completely iconic and fitting last moment for Jeter in his home ballpark. As his teammates mobbed him in the infield, it all really sunk in that this was finally it for Jeter. And I couldn't be happier that I got that as my lasting image for Jeter in Yankee Stadium. While it has been a mostly down farewell season for the Captain, to go out on a high not like this is exactly how it should be.
