The Virginia band talks about who they’d want to tour with and upcoming projects like Lock’n Festival.

Interview: People's Blues of Richmond

A couple weeks ago, we welcomed People's Blues of Richmond into the CHARGED.fm studios for a LIVE session. I bet you'll never guess where their from. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Now that you've had time to Google it, the Richmond, Virginia-based band has a lot on their plate this summer/fall. They recently won a Deli D.C. vote for Band of the Month and will be performing at Lock'n Festival in Virginia this weekend. With an organic, multi-genre sound, the guys in PBR (Tim Beavers II - Vox/Guitar, Matthew Volkes - Vox/Bass, Nekoro Williams - Vox/Drums) have found a sweet combination and a nice path to success.

The guys were nice enough to answer some of our questions in an email exchange, and here's what the group had to say, complete with a bit of a cliffhanger at the end!

Tell me a little bit about the history of your band. How did you guys form and how did you know you wanted to play emotional, bluesy rock?

The band formed in 2009 Tim and i (Matthew Volkes) had known each other since we were kids and were living together and going to VCU. After a mutual friend took his own life we started jamming together and it helped us grieve. After that we went to an open mic night and have been running hard ever since.

How do you guys like the Richmond scene musically and creatively?

Richmond has an amazing music scene, one of the best around in my opinion. It's small enough that everyone knows each other and big enough for bands to develop. Every night of the week the bars are packed the stages are lit up and the sounds are ringing in your ears. There are some really great RVA bands to look out for: The Southern Belles, sleepwalkers, Avers, and so many more I can't list them all. You should all come to RVA and see for yourself.

When you guys tour, what are some of the things you like to do to pass the time on the road?

We do what ever we can think of to pass the time; a lot of sleeping and eating and we like putting Neko's laptop on the front console and watching movies.

If you could tour with anyone, who would it be?

Gogol Bordello; they know how to put on a show and get the crowd rowdy.

What's your favorite live memory? (Either a concert or show you've seen, attended or been a part of)

The time we smashed some drums and guitars and a TV on stage with an axe at a festival we played in VA called Pasture Palooza. That was cool.

You guys are slated to perform at Lock'n Festival and just won the Deli DC's Band of the Month poll. How excited are you about both and what else do you guys have coming up?

Very excited for Lock'n. There are a lot of amazing acts on the bill and it's probably going to be the loudest we have ever played!!! We have a lot of exciting opportunities on the horizon and look forward to sharing them with everyone. Up next we have some more festivals in West Virginia, Florida and North Carolina and we will be announcing our Halloween dates soon....
