2014 NFL Preview: New York Giants

In this article…

The New York Giants are committed to rebounding strongly after a disappointing 2013 season. Although the team finished the season by winning seven of their last ten games, an 0-6 start all but spoiled their playoff hopes. During the offseason, however, the G-Men made it clear that they still plan to right away.

The Giants greatly improved their secondary, signing an elite cornerback in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as well as Walter Thurmond III and Quintin Demps. With linebacker Jameel McClain also coming to town and Stevie Brown and Jason Pierre-Paul finally healthy, this should be a very solid Giants defense. We saw glimpses of this during their first preseason game against the Bills on Sunday night.

On offense, the team has some great pieces in place. Eli Manning is looking to rebound after the worst season of his career and with a new offensive scheme in place, this could be a very improved Giants offense as well. Newly signed running back Rashad Jennings as well as fourth-round draft pick running back Andre Williams will try to help soften the crushing blow the team suffered when 23-year-old running back David Wilson decided to retire due to recurring neck injuries.

This has certainly been a busy offseason for the Giants. To discuss what this season could have in store for the team, we spoke to Ed Valentine of Big Blue View.

In what ways do you think that Eli Manning and the Giants offense will improve now that Ben McAdoo has replaced Kevin Gilbride as the offensive coordinator?

First and foremost you should see fewer turnovers. Manning threw a ridiculous 27 interceptions last season, and that number has to go down. The new offense relies on shorter throws, timing routes and fewer options for the receivers. There will be deep throws, but not as much risk. The pace of this offense should also be better, but it will take time for the Giants to master the new scheme. It won't be perfect right away.

The Giants have to be concerned with their linebackers, offensive line, and tight ends. Which position do you think the team is most worried about heading into training camp?

Well, they have to fix the offensive line. They were very aggressive in bringing guys in, and they have to hope that all the pieces fit. Right now we still don't know who the starting tight end will be, so that is an issue.

After undergoing surgery on his back, Jason Pierre-Paul had a disappointing 2013 season. What should Giants fans expect from the extremely talented defensive end this year?

JPP says he is healthy and he seems to be moving well in camp. I don't know if he can get back to being a dominant player, but he should be much better.

Which rookie do you believe will have the biggest impact in his first year?

Offensively that will be Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants need some production from the rookie, who has missed significant practice time with a hamstring injury. On defense, linebacker Devon Kennard has been outstanding thus far.

Which player do you think is most likely to breakout this season?

The young player the Giants are really hoping will make a step forward is defensive end Damontre Moore. He could be a huge difference-maker for them on the defensive line, and I think he will show improvement this year.

What are your predictions for the team this year?

I think this is a playoff team, 9-7 or 10-6. But with all the changes the Giants made nothing is certain. It could be a 5-11 or 6-10 year, and that wouldn't be stunning
