Tracy McGrady Pitches First Strikeout, Retires From Baseball

Tracy McGrady took the mound in the Atlantic League All-Star Game Wednesday night as a starter. In the second inning, the 35-year-old McGrady struck out the last batter he faced, and promptly quit while he was ahead.

The seven-time NBA All-Star signed on to pitch for the Sugar Land Skeeters in February. He hadn't played baseball competitively since his junior year in high school. In his four outings with the Skeeters, McGrady posted a 6.75 ERA. He compiled 10 walks in just 6.2 without registering a strikeout. That was part of his motivation in the All-Star Game.

After the game, McGrady told CBS Houston's Brett Dolan that the baseball he struck batter Bryan Pounds out with was "definitely going in the trophy case."

"I told some of the guys that I am going to get a strikeout before I stop playing," he continued. "I got it in the second inning. Thank you Jesus.”

Here is the final moment of his pitching career:

McGrady's stint in the Minor Leagues didn't just end with a strikeout, though. He also teamed up with Lamar Little Leaguer Will Dolan to win the Atlantic League Home Run Derby. Together the team hit six home runs, and McGrady watched Dolan hit all six of them.

“I am the first Home Run Derby Champion in history with no home runs,” he joked.

Despite the clumsiness of his baseball career, McGrady said "It was a tremendous ride."

"Not having my basketball career end the way I wanted but having the opportunity to be friends with some of the guys and get to know them and compete with them, learn from them every day, it’s been an honor.”

After the All-Star game, McGrady admitted, "I got a little emotional coming off the mound. It feels good to be celebrated again.”
